Fyke net demo at Earth Day Celebration
Scott Richardson ~ 2007-04-13
Researchers at the Wells Reserve will have a fyke net set up at the reserve’s Earth Day Celebration April 21 to show how they use the net for surveying fish in salt marshes.
Fyke nets catch small fish. Juveniles are expected in the nets, though adults of some species are also small enough to be caught (e.g., herring, silverside).
Using fyke nets allows scientists to obtain data on fish populations while gaining clues about which species use particular areas for nursery, feeding, or spawning habitat.
