Windowpane Flounder by James Dochtermann

James Dochtermann is a scientist and artist currently working at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. As a scientist, he has investigated fish communities and habitats in estuaries, watersheds, and offshore areas of the Gulf of Maine. That research informs his artistry, where he uses oil and water-based paints to depict fishes and their habitats.

Dochtermann recently spent two years in northern Japan, where he compared and contrasted his knowledge of Maine’s environment with the habitats and species of Tohoku. He produced artwork for several showings in Japan. His illustrations have also appeared in numerous documents and publications relating to the Gulf of Maine. James lives in Alfred with his wife Junko. His website is at JamesDochtermann.com.

Dochtermann’s exhibit will continue for the Wells Reserve Earth Day Celebration on Saturday.
